Impressive antique Italian torchère or pedestal stand, hand-carved in wood with an aged gilt surface. The circular top is supported by an ornate pierced standard decorated with scrolling volutes, acanthus leaves and classical architectural details, rising from an elaborate tripod base. Retains a beautifully timeworn gilt finish with expected losses, age cracks and old surface wear. Acquired from the Charleston estate of Countess Alicia Spaulding Paolozzi, noted patron and early supporter of Spoleto Festival USA. Circa 1880–1900.
